The Role

The Manager Banking Policy leads a team delivering a portfolio of public policy projects as part of the Policy branch leadership team. You will be responsible for developing and managing your people and be accountable for robust policy development. You will need to build strong working relationships with a broad range of external and internal stakeholders and be able to steer large, complex projects.

The Team
APRA has a set of rules and guidelines called the prudential framework, which is designed to ensure that regulated financial institutions are financially sound, managed well and can meet their commitments to customers and beneficiaries. In turn, this promotes a stable and efficient financial system for all Australians.
The Policy branch has several teams led by Policy Managers; together, they develop and maintain the prudential framework. They facilitate the complete policy process, from defining the policy problem through to drafting of legally enforceable prudential standards and evaluating impact.
To design and implement effective policy, the branch collaborates with a wide range of internal stakeholders (such as legal, advice and approvals, risk specialists and frontline supervisors) and external stakeholders (such as government departments, other regulatory agencies, industry associations and regulated institutions).

Key responsibilities

Managing and empowering your team;
Modelling inclusive leadership behaviours and instilling a culture of openness within the team, where divergent views are shared and respected;
Leading policy projects and initiatives, including planning, coaching, monitoring progress, strategic navigation and oversight;
Guiding and supporting team members in progressing their deliverables and meeting their performance and development goals;
Building and maintaining effective relationships with other areas of APRA;
Maintaining an up-to-date and relevant knowledge of policy issues that may impact the industry;
Engaging stakeholders to review or revise elements of the prudential framework; and
Drafting or reviewing policy briefings, discussion papers, prudential standards or guidance.

About you

APRA’s leaders play an integral role in shaping our culture, supporting our people and preparing APRA for the future; therefore, the successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in:

leading teams and/or large projects;
engaging collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders internally and externally on industry and regulatory issues;
development of public policy; and
financial services, or regulation thereof.
You should also have a positive mindset and an energetic approach to solving 'wicked problems’ and be willing to offer new ideas and a fresh perspective.

To work with us, you must be an Australian citizen with eligibility to gain a Baseline Security clearance through the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency.
