The Court and Justice Services (CJS) Division provides a wide range of resolution and court services for people involved in legal disputes. In collaboration with the courts of Alberta, Court and Justice Services provides various programs and services including educating and helping Albertans finding solutions for legal issues, navigating the court system, offering programs at no cost or a nominal charge, and administrative support to all courts in Alberta.

Role Responsibilities
Join our team as a Manager, Court of Justice and Court of King’s Bench Operations, where you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to the division’s vision in facilitating innovation, collaboration, and strategic leadership!

This role is perfect for a dynamic and collaborative leader, as you will be managing the Court of Justice and Court of King’s Bench Operations, overseeing activities in Grande Prairie court and circuits related programs and services to the citizens of Alberta.

Your primary focus will be on leading court operations within a dynamic business environment, which includes departmental business plans, intakes and disbursement of monies, multiple budget allocations, and a diverse stakeholder group.

Travel to circuit court locations will be required.

Your key areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

Managing the Grande Prairie Court operational teams in all aspects of court administration activities, ensuring that the work of the Division aligns to the complex strategy and policy environment affecting the Government of Alberta, the Ministry, the Court and, more broadly, Albertans who expect to be served by the system.
Holding Expenditure Officer authority for the Grande Prairie office which involves being accountable to maintaining an accurate budget and variance report process; ensuring that financial management is within acceptable audit definitions and departmental/divisional directions; and managing daily trust accounts and revenue monies.
Supporting the Directors, Court of Justice and Court of King’s Bench Operations providing data and input into initiatives that establish and sustain excellent delivery of operational plans that align with the key strategic priorities.
Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with stakeholders using the trust established to assess the capability and capacity of the region to deliver its mandate.
Effectively lead the resources that will enable transformational change, standardizations of processes, and the continuous improvement of recommended business structures, operations and working practices in court administration.
Assist in rolling out the Executive Leadership and Court’s vision for working within the court system and the Justice system and the impact this has on the court administrations area.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:

University graduation in a related field (e.g. Business Management, Criminology, Law, Public Administration, Social Sciences, etc.), supplemented by four (4) years of related management leadership experience, with a background of working with court operations and in a judicial or legal environment.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

1 year of education for 1 year of experience; OR
1 year of experience for 1 year of education.


Assets
Preference will be given to candidates with:

Working knowledge of the Alberta Rules of Court.
Working knowledge of the different areas of law, legislation, and guidelines, including the Youth Criminal Justice Act, Family Law Act regulation, Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Regulation, and Jury Act Regulation.
Working knowledge of the applicable Criminal Code of Canada, as well as Federal and Provincial Statutes, as they relate to all areas of Traffic and Civil law (Criminal, Family, Surrogate, Adoptions, Youth, Court of King’s Bench and Alberta Court of Justice procedures)
Working knowledge of JOIN (Justice Online Information Network), CASES (used by the courts for civil cases), FTR Digital Recording Software
Extensive experience working in management role, preferable in judicial environment is preferred.
Experience in projecting and forecasting budget is considered asset.
Experience in recruitment and selection, annual performance evaluation: assessment and feedback, overseeing training development, coaching & Mentoring is asset.

Position Information:

This posting is for one full-time permanent position in Grande Prairie, located at the Grande Prairie Courthouse.
Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
You must have access to reliable transportation as public transit may not be readily available to travel to different work sites.
Hybrid working arrangements are not available for this position.
Eligibility to be appointed as a Non-Presiding Justice of the Peace requires the incumbent to be a Canadian Citizen.
