The Role
The Director Force Health Protection will exercise a significant degree of independence and perform an important leadership role. They will be responsible for influencing and developing health protection strategies and health surveillance capabilities, along with relevant policies, priorities and operational practices in support of Defence objectives based on high level decision making and judgement. They will provide strategic and technical health advice to senior management and stakeholders as well as leading and assuming accountability for public health initiatives, along with public health emergency preparedness and response planning.

The Director Health Protection is accountable to lead two or more work teams, plan and manage a range of human and physical resources and exercise the associated people and financial responsibilities. They will provide support to policy development and implementation and provide the strategic direction to the work unit, including developing business plans, strategies and priorities and monitor work flow and performance. They are accountable for developing, coaching and reviewing individual, team and business performance, and will identify opportunities for building team capability and continuous improvement. They will set work aligned with strategic objectives and communicate expected outcomes.

The Director Force Health Protection will have extensive knowledge relating to the methodology, systems and procedures within the public health function and have the ability to translate this into strategy. They will provide a strategic level of specialist, professional and technical expertise, potentially relating to the work of different function or discipline areas. They will initiate, establish and maintain strong relationships with a network of stakeholders internally and externally and will have the ability to recognise shared agendas and work toward mutually beneficial outcomes.

About our Team
The Force Health Protection Directorate sits within Health Protection and Policy Branch, Joint Health Command. This newly established directorate will be responsible for the provision of population health advice, including public health, epidemiology and environmental health advice to optimise the health and health readiness of ADF members. The directorate will consist of integrated APS/ADF specialist teams in the areas of public health medicine, health surveillance and epidemiology and environmental health.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate is a motivated and enthusiastic individual who can lead an integrated and multidisciplinary team. They will have strong interpersonal and communication skills and be confident in translating health information for decision makers. They will have a sound understanding of health in the military context, and frame strategies and outputs appropriate to each context. They will demonstrate a sound understanding of compliance with relevant health legislative frameworks, government direction, policy requirements and the Australian Defence Force's (ADF) mission. They will be able to engage in effective key stakeholder relationships within Joint Health Command as well as with the single Services (Navy, Army, Air Force), other Defence Groups and relevant entities external to Defence.
