Description

The Company:
Postmedia is a Canadian newsmedia company representing more than 130 brands across multiple print, online and mobile platforms. Award-winning journalists and innovative product development teams bring engaging content to millions of people every week, whenever and wherever they want it. This exceptional content, reach and scope offers advertisers and marketers compelling solutions to effectively reach target audiences. We are always on the lookout for talented individuals to join our team.

The Opportunity:
The Telegram is seeking a multimedia journalist to join our team in St. John’s, NL, as a Local Journalism Initiative reporter.

Your main focus will be on Indigenous reporting across Newfoundland and Labrador, where you’ll tell their stories and report on issues, achievements and challenges. You’ll also be covering issues and stories in Labrador and in rural Newfoundland remotely. Strong knowledge of Indigenous cultures and issues or connections to Indigenous communities is considered an asset.

Driven by the demands of speed and online readership growth, the multimedia journalist must flexibly juggle assignments as well as generating ideas for content to attract and keep readers returning to the Telegram.com daily. A strong understanding of SEO and best practices for web is considered a bonus, as is familiarity with platforms like Wordpress, but support and training will be provided.

The position is a unionized job, working with a remote newsroom, beginning Aug. 4. The Local Journalism Initiative program is a contracted position until March 31, 2026, with possibility of extension.
What you’ll do:
Tell the stories of Indigenous people in NL, as well as provide coverage of rural Newfoundland and coverage of Labrador.
Build strong connections with Indigenous communities and focus first on telling their stories.
Report and write stories for our website, as well as tailoring content to meet the varying needs of our platforms.
Skilled with using social media to find sources, story ideas and topics of interest to the community each day and respond to explain why these talking pieces are important to NL
Strong phone skills, as you’ll often be reporting from a distance.
Respond quickly to stories that are important to our readers, turning around pieces that will help grow readership online by providing context, analysis and explanations.
Initiating and developing ideas for enterprise stories and investigative projects.
Cultivating sources and establishing expertise in order to break stories.
Working with digital teams to create other multimedia elements.
Qualifications

Our ideal candidate is skilled at writing features as well as web reporting on immediate issues. We're looking for someone who is proficient at storytelling and able to write articles that can condense information in a way that explains or analyzes what’s happening for our online readers.

Our candidate is a team player, willing to work with colleagues to do investigative pieces or larger projects, and able to work independently, as this is a work-from-home role. The candidate must be able to generate story ideas that coincide with the LJI mandate to cover NL’s Indigenous community, Labrador, and rural NL.

The ability to use digital tools to identify news needs and maximize ways to meet them is critical to the position, as is working closely with the managing editor and assistant news editor.

Who you are:
Experience at a news organization in a deadline-oriented reporting/writing role.
Fluency in digital platforms, multimedia journalism and social media.
Ability to work quickly and independently, meet multiple deadlines, and make efficient decisions.
Ability to work constructively as part of a newsroom team.
Interested applicants should apply online without delay, including a detailed resume and a covering letter explaining why they are ideal for the position. Mention you found this job on Jeff Gaulin's Journalism Job Board.

We thank in advance all applicants for their interest, however only those candidates under consideration will be contacted. Only candidates legally eligible to work in Canada will be considered. No phone calls or agencies please.
