Job Description

Position Summary

The On-Site Coordinator at the Heritage North Museum is responsible for daily operations, as well as promotion of programming, exhibitions, and event planning. They will also assist with the proper care, management, and documentation of the artifact and archival collections, as well as the gift shop and consignment operation. The On-Site Coordinator leads engagement with the public and acts as a first point of contact for visitors and clients.

Supervisory Relationship

Reports to and receives work assignments directly from the Executive Director of the museum, guided by the strategies of the Heritage North Museum Board of Directors.

Duties and Responsibilities

Museum programming, events, and special exhibits
Creates, coordinates, and delivers educational and community programming/tours for groups of all ages, abilities, and origins, both inside the museum and for outdoor events
Maintains the Museum's events calendar with oversight from the Executive Director
With the Executive Director, annually creates, reviews, and implements an exhibit plan
Assists with the care and management of fragile artifacts and historical collections
Coordinates with Museum volunteers and term staff, including recruitment, training, task assignments, and supervision
With support of the Board of Directors Collections Management Committee, collects and maintains records of artifacts donated and/or loaned to the Museum in accordance with a Collections Management Policy
Serves as the Board of Director's Programming and Events Committee's assistant/liaison
Performs various duties at exhibitions, programs, and event functions to ensure smooth operation as needed
Communications and Marketing

Identify and coordinate outreach opportunities
Regularly update the Executive Director on any new projects and proposals that may be a good fit for the Museum
Essential Skills for this Role

Extensive interaction with the public by greeting visitors and being able to provide an overview of Thompson's history and the site's history
Responding to questions in an engaging manner and directing visitors to tourist locations around town, providing information on local accommodations, restaurants, etc.
Provide excellent customer service and process giftshop sales
Assist in basic housekeeping
Creativity and basic photographic skills
A basic understanding of Thompson's diverse community groups and history, including a background of Indigenous relations and traditions in the North
Willingness to learn and understand history from a corrective perspective
Qualifications

Work experience in museums, a knowledge of museum practices and historical research is an asset
Experience in project management, digital content creation (Canva, InDesign, etc.) or public relations
Excellent public-speaking skills
Able to maintain professionalism when giving and receiving information in writing, in person, and over the phone
Familiar with Microsoft Office programs, and comfortable with exploring new technological tools
Working knowledge of major social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube
Strong sense of diplomacy and confidentiality when dealing with stakeholders and clientele
Must be able to work both independently and part of a team
Working Conditions

Ability to work flexible hours when needed, including evenings and some weekends on occasion
Full time (40 hours a week); exact hours of work will be received in offer of employment. Occasional overtime is required due to the nature of programming schedules
Ability to carefully lift and move fragile Museum artifacts and exhibit pieces. Applicant should therefore be able to safely lift up to 30-40lbs.
Ability to stand, walk medium distance, and speak loudly and clearly for tours
Extensive orientation and training is provided. Applicant will be provided with reading materials on Thompson's history as required.
