THE OPPORTUNITY
The Operator - Roads is responsible to operate all vehicles and equipment in accomplishing the operations and maintenance tasks assigned in delivering the prescribed programs and services in the Roads section of the City. Depending on the season, this positions duties and responsibilities will vary. Shift work (days, evening and night rotation) will be required during snow and ice control operations. Occasional on call is a requirement during the summer season. This position reports to the Manager of Roads.
This is a temporary full-time position from for the winter season from October 20, 2026 to March 27, 2026. This position is part of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).
The hourly rate for this position is:
Step 1 - $33.56
Step 2 - $34.55
Step 3 - $35.33
Step 4 - $36.31
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Roads Maintenance and Operations
Operate diverse vehicles and equipment in a safe and skillful manner to complete assigned tasks.
Perform all assigned tasks in roadway snow and ice control operations.
Repair and replacement of city sidewalks.
Maintenance of traffic control devices including traffic signs and traffic lights.
Perform asphalt repair and maintenance.
2. Client Relations
Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within area of assignment and resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
Develop and maintain ongoing working relationship with vendors, contractors and various City departments.
Determine appropriate responses and required assistance to address emergent issues encountered.
Monitor contractors to ensure they are working safely and work is to the City's specifications.
3. Other Duties
Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time.
Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies and procedures for staff and contractors.
Act as a steward of the City's Corporate Culture by following the “Values, We Live By”.
All employees shall act in a safe manner at all times and will report any unsafe conditions, procedures or acts for the benefit of the City. Continual adherence to the City Safety Policy is mandatory.
Employee are expected to stay current on WHMIS and other safety-related procedures.
Perform other job-related duties.
May provide back up for peer group Operator-Utilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or GED.
A minimum of two (2) years' experience in the operation of various equipment.
Heavy equipment operations training.
Must possess the physical strength and dexterity to perform manual labour for extended periods of time under various weather conditions.
Road and underground construction and/or maintenance experience.
Proven knowledge of the methods, practices, and rules of the safe operation of the assigned equipment and occupational hazards applicable to the work.
Ability to respond to inquiries/complaints in a manner that is sensitive to the needs of the public demonstrating strong customer service.
Ability to work both independently as well as within a multifaceted team environment.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:
Municipal experience.
Grader experience.
Certifications and training in equipment operations.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Valid Alberta Class 3Q Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with air endorsement.
Must obtain a satisfactory review of a three-year Driver’s Abstract with a maximum of six (6) demerits.
Satisfactory assessment on equipment competency must be achieved as part of the recruitment process.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
24-hour winter shift schedule will be effective during the winter months.
Overtime may be required.
Requires work outdoors in all conditions, working in an office environment, working in shop work bays and in proximity to active vehicular traffic.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stairs, kneeling, manual dexterity, visual acuity/color vision.
Climbing ladders, balancing, crawling, crouching, depth perception/night, lifting, pushing, reaching (both arms), use of feet (for control), pulling, outside work.
Lifting to 20kg (44lbs).
