Job Description

Opportunity Information:
Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Clinical Health Psychology - California Pacific Medical Center

Department of Psychiatry:
The CPMC Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Clinical Health Psychology offers high-quality training to the next generation of health psychologists. We offer five full-time positions. The 12-month training program is a planned, structured, and administered sequence of professionally supervised clinical training that satisfies the California Board of Psychology licensing requirements for post-doctoral training. Fellows specialize in providing psychological services in interdisciplinary medical settings. We work with patients and their families to cope effectively with acute and chronic disease, make lifestyle changes, and address a range of psychosocial problems. Under the direction of experienced clinical supervisors, our fellows provide individual, couples, family, and group therapy, offer evidence-based treatment for anxiety, depression and other psychiatric disorders, deliver targeted behavioral interventions, and design lifestyle interventions to promote patient’s health and well-being and prevent disease recurrence.

Tracks and Rotations:
Psycho-Oncology Track (12-months). Fellows provide psychological services to cancer patients and their families immediately following diagnosis, throughout active treatment, and during transitions to survivorship or palliative care. We have established collaborations with the Breast Cancer Recovery Program, Chemotherapy Infusion and Radiation Oncology clinics, and Palliative Care clinic to offer services across the entire continuum of care.

Perinatal Mental Health Track (12 months). Working closely with obstetrics specialists, fellows offer a range of psychological services for women and their partners facing challenges with postpartum anxiety and depression, miscarriage, infant loss, and pregnancy termination. Fellows are integrated into our outpatient OG-GYN clinic and inpatient obstetrics units to provide on-site consultation, short-term psychotherapy, targeted behavioral interventions, educational classes, and post-partum support groups.

Behavioral Cardiology Rotation (6-months). Fellows work closely with an interdisciplinary Cardiac Rehabilitation team to improve psychological adjustment and help patients make significant behavioral and lifestyle changes.

Neurogastroenterology Rotation (6-months). Fellows provide psychological assessment and targeted behavioral interventions as part of an interdisciplinary Neurogastroenterology and Motility program focusing on the treatment of functional GI disorders.

Palliative Care Communication Skills Training (4-months). Fellows provide communication skills training to first-year CPMC Internal Medicine Residents as part of their two-week rotation with the Palliative Care Service.

Collaborative Assessment (3-months). Fellows will have the opportunity to incorporate principles of Collaborative Assessment into their assessment practices in order to maximize the therapeutic value to patients.

Supervision Philosophy
A combination of individual and group supervision is provided by our experienced faculty, consisting of 2-3 hours of individual supervision and 2-3 hours of group supervision each week. In addition to meeting with Dr. Jeremy Bornstein, Director of Psychology Training Programs and primary supervisor for the program, fellows are assigned additional supervisors for individual and group supervision, depending their track, the rotation schedule, and individualized training plans.

Training Curriculum
The foundation of our training curriculum is a year-long, weekly Health Psychology Seminar. The Psycho-Oncology Fellows attend a weekly group supervision and case conference with Dr. Atallah, while Women’s Mental Health Fellows also attend a weekly seminar and case conference led by Catherine Mallouh, MD. Additional supervision is provided for the various rotations and supplementary classes are offered through the CPMC Department of Psychiatry.

Training Philosophy
We offer a unique training experience that emphasizes professional development, a Fellow-centered training experience, and maintaining healthy work/life balance. At CPMC, our Fellows are highly valued members of interdisciplinary medical teams and gain experience working autonomously in a supportive learning environment with two primary goals: (1) the best possible educational experience for our Fellows and (2) making a difference in the lives of our patients and their families. We're deeply committed to providing both education and clinical care that fully embraces individual and cultural differences.
