As a Planning Engineer in the water and wastewater asset planning team, you’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring our city’s water supply and wastewater systems are resilient, sustainable, and ready to support future growth.

In this specialist infrastructure development planning role, you’ll help ensure Christchurch’s water and wastewater infrastructure is designed, developed, and delivered to a high standard. You’ll provide trusted technical advice, assess development proposals, and support the long‑term performance of our networks. In this role you will:
Provide technical planning advice and engineering review for new water and wastewater connections to ensure compliance with legislation and Council standards.
Deliver key planning outputs including hydraulic capacity assessments, infrastructure master plans, infrastructure provider agreements, and engineering acceptance of both water supply and wastewater networks.
Support internal and external stakeholders with expert engineering advice for consents, plan changes, customer enquiries, and online guidance.
Contribute to team procedures, collaboration, and mentor other team members to strengthen capability.

You’ll bring strong technical expertise, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to work confidently with a wide range of stakeholders. You’re someone who can balance detailed analysis with practical, solution‑focused thinking, and you enjoy contributing to a collaborative team environment. You will also bring:
A degree in Civil or Natural Resources Engineering
At least 7 years of engineering experience with at least 3 years in the planning and design of water supply and wastewater infrastructure
Strong understanding of relevant New Zealand legislation, Council standards, and development processes.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical information clearly for different audiences.

Position - Permanent full-time
Location - This position is primarily based at Te Hononga, Christchurch City Council Civic Offices - 53 Hereford Street
Salary - The salary band for this position goes from $105,450 to $117,167 per annum based on a 40 hour week. Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
Closing Date - 15/02/2026
