Job Description
As the process owner, work at pace cognisant of both detail and big picture
Provide advice and support to our real-time power system control rooms
Our core purpose is to empower the energy future for New Zealand – a future that delivers a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable and secure electricity system.
As both the owner and system operator of the National Grid, we transport high voltage electricity from generation sites to cities and industrial users. As System Operator, we run the wholesale electricity market and operate the power system so that New Zealand homes and businesses can access the electricity they need, every second of every day.
About the team
Our Operations Planning Group coordinates and assesses outages and provides engineering advice to enable the safe and secure operation of the power system through our real-time control room functions. This includes providing strategic advice on Operations Planning, providing power flow analysis and modelling, and engineering support to enable Transpower in its role as System Operator to meet its principal performance obligation.
The System Security Team as part of Operations Planning, provides engineering and analytical advice working in the near team, to assess planned outages and keep the System Operator’s operational tool set up to date with changes in asset capability information and newly commissioned equipment.
About the Opportunity
As part of the Operations Planning management team and located in your choice of either our Waikoukou head office in Wellington, or in Hamilton, you'll lead a team of ~6 engineers responsible for assessing outages up to six weeks in advance, checking for security risks, and communicating operational requirements needed to support the outages and enable a secure power system.
Providing System Operator advice to the Grid Owner and other industry participants, and working closely with Market Services, Outage Planning, Planning and Project Support, and Real Time teams, you'll offer specialist advice and technical assistance and enjoy intellectual challenge as you help solve complex problems.
Building strong relationships and working across our National Control Centres, Power System team, and Outage Planning team, as well as wider national grid teams, you’ll communicate with counterparts in generators, lines companies, and some large industrials who connect directly to the Grid.
Drive continuous improvement and positive, tangible outcomes for the direct and wider team. Stay across the evolution of the power sector; the changes in generation types, operations, the national grid, and how electricity users respond, to ensure you and your team adapt, as required.
So, what will you bring?
You'll be passionate about leading people, developing capability, and continuous improvement.
Known as someone who is equally interested in the detail as the big picture, you'll zoom in and zoom out as required, whilst utilising your experience in a complex, results driven planning and process owner role, where you have ideally lead change initiatives, and guided expert decision making for both operational and technical issues.
Your CV and cover letter will demonstrate:
Deep technical and operational knowledge and experience of the New Zealand power system ideally underpinned by a relevant qualification
Experience as a people leader where you have optimised both performance and business outcomes
Demonstrated ability to manage, analyse and interpret complex processes, identify, and understand requirements and develop alternatives
Sound ability to form, maintain, and manage relationships at an operational as well as senior management level, and with experienced external industry professionals
Astute problem-solving skills (in this role for example, you’ll consider the implications of low/high hydro and/or thermal generation how this may impact system security and outage planning)
