The role
The Senior Environmental Officer undertakes environmental assessments of detailed and complex resource industry proposals and monitors compliance with environmental regulatory requirements across the minerals and energy sector. This role plays a critical part in ensuring that exploration and resource development activities meet statutory environmental standards and align with contemporary best practice.
Operating at a senior specialist level, the position provides high-level technical and strategic advice to the Department’s Executive, industry stakeholders, peak bodies and the broader community on matters relating to environmental legislation, policy and regulatory obligations. This position requires sound professional judgement, analytical capability and the ability to interpret and apply complex legislative frameworks in a dynamic regulatory environment.
The successful applicant will demonstrate considerable knowledge and substantial experience in environmental impact assessment processes, including the preparation of detailed reports relating to complex assessments, investigations and analytical research. A strong understanding of environmental regulation is essential, including proven experience in evaluating compliance, interpreting statutory requirements and contributing to the development of environmental management strategies.
This is a key position supporting the responsible development of the State’s mineral and energy resources while safeguarding environmental values and maintaining public confidence in regulatory decision-making.

While this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other similar vacancies (permanent, fixed-term, full-time or part-time) within the department for the next 12 months, from the date that the recruitment breach period has been finalised.
This position can be filled at either our Kalgoorlie or Mineral House – East Perth office. Eligibility
To be eligible for a permanent appointment, applicants must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a visa to live and work indefinitely in Australia at the time of application. Applicants with a valid visa to work and live in Australia for a specific duration may be assessed and considered suitable for similar fixed term vacancies that arise.
Should a qualification be required for this position, applicants must provide their certification and/or academic transcripts to verify relevance to the job requirements. Qualifications obtained outside of Australia must be provided with an assessment from the Overseas Qualifications Unit to ensure they meet Australian Standards (this is a free service).
