The Opportunity | Te āheinga

We’re on the lookout for a confident, people-focused Senior Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor to join us in a permanent role and help champion a positive, proactive safety culture across NPDC.

In this role, you’ll play a key part in shaping how we keep our people, contractors and community safe. You’ll lead the way in strengthening our health, safety and wellbeing practices, offering expert guidance on how our policies and processes come to life in day‑to‑day work. You’ll also act as a trusted partner to leaders, helping them create environments where everyone can thrive and go home safe and well each day.

Key Responsibilities | Ngā haepapa matua

Provide health, safety & wellbeing (HSW) expertise and advice
Ensure NPDC is actively managing its HSW hazards and risks.
Ability to communicate clearly and influence a wide range of stakeholders to adopt safe practices.
Resolve complex HSW issues, recommending appropriate courses of action to address any compliance and legislative issues and matters.
Incorporate NPDC’s core corporate HSW policies and procedures, into operational and strategic decision making.
Monitors, manages and reports on NPDC’s critical risks and assurance programmes.
Supports the HSW Lead in in preparing and undertaking health and safety auditing and compliance related activities.
Accurately records and documents all decisions, recommendations and/or resolutions.
Supports the HSW Business Partners as appropriate, and especially in high risk/major incidents.

Essential Skills and Experience | Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako

Relevant tertiary qualification - degree or diploma.
Five years minimum work experience in a health and safety role.
Excellent knowledge and understanding of current New Zealand health and safety legislation.
Ability to understand and apply appropriate health and safety principles to operational activities.
Understanding of occupational health and injury management practices and processes.
Good understanding of safety management systems.
Able to challenge ‘mental models’ in a positive and constructive way, to drive change and new thinking.
Some knowledge of relevant HR policies and procedures.
Proven ability to build strong working relationships.
High level of computer technology competency and Microsoft Products, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Excellent organisational and time management skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proven ability to work independently and make decisions as required.
