Job Description

The Corporate, Commercial and Litigation Branch is seeking highly skilled and motivated applicants to fill multiple current and expected vacancies at the Legal 1 (Executive Level 1) level on a non-ongoing and ongoing basis spanning practice areas including privacy and information law, and litigation and dispute resolution.

The key duties of the position include:
Senior Lawyers have the ability and experience to undertake very complex or sensitive matters under the supervision and broad direction of a Principal Lawyer. Senior Lawyers are expected to exercise a considerable degree of independence and contribute to the leadership of their teams and generally have supervisory responsibilities.

In addition, work undertaken at this level, depending on the practice area, may include:

Preparing accurate solutions-based legal advice including in relation to privacy obligations and secrecy provisions,
Assessing data breaches, investigating and drafting responses to privacy complaints, reviewing privacy impact assessments and developing privacy-related policies and procedures,
Managing litigation and dispute resolution matters,
Managing the production of documents and assisting with the preparation of witness statements for court and/or tribunal proceedings,
Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with clients and external legal providers,
Briefing senior executives,
Second counselling the work of junior lawyers, and
Building team capacity and culture.
Eligibility
To be eligible for employment with the Department of Health and Aged Care, applicants must be an Australian citizen at the time an offer of employment is made.

An applicant’s suitability for employment with Health and Aged Care will also be assessed through a variety of pre-employment check processes, such as:

Satisfactory completion of a criminal history check, and where relevant, a Working with Children and Vulnerable People Check,
Completion of a medical declaration and pre-employment medical (where required),
Providing evidence of qualifications (where required), and
Obtaining and maintaining a security clearance at the required level.
For this role applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance or hold a current security clearance at an appropriate level.

Mandatory Qualification:
Bachelor of Laws degree or equivalent
Admission or eligibility for admission as a legal practitioner in an Australian Court; and
Eligibility to hold a restricted Government practising certificate.

Employees perform their duties at one of the Department of Health and Aged Care (DoHAC) offices, in the locations specified in this advertisement. Remote working is possible and is negotiated with your manager on commencement. Flexibility can be negotiated with your manager to balance your personal and professional needs with the needs of your role and business area.

This recruitment process is being used to fill both ongoing and non-ongoing positions. Non-ongoing positions will be offered on a specified term basis for an initial period of up to 12 months with the possibility of being extended by an additional 12 months (cannot exceed 24 months in total).
