ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo has a temporary full-time employment opportunity for a Special Projects Coordinator – FireSmart, working with the Emergency Services Department. This position is responsible for coordinating FireSmart activities within the Electoral Areas of the Regional District of Nanaimo with primary responsibilities including coordinating grant funding, applying for, and managing the FireSmart, as well as other projects and administration support. The position will ensure that the FireSmart activities are supported, developed, and implemented in accordance with Provincial guidelines and the direction provided by the Regional District of Nanaimo.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must possess a post-secondary degree in environmental studies, geography, forestry, or a related field, plus one to three years prior job-related experience. We are looking for someone with knowledge of wildfire, fire, and public safety education, fire service operation, and emergency management, along with experience in grant application processes, project coordination, and administration. Professional experience in the field of education, FireSmart, wildfire management, fire behaviour, and suppression, or fire prevention is preferred. A combination of education and experience will be considered.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a temporary full-time (35 hours per week) Union Position starting as soon as possible for three (3) months, with the possibility to end early or be extended based on operational needs. The hours of work may vary, and weekend work may be required. The 2024 rate of pay is $38.17-40.18 per hour, plus 12.4% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays, or the uninterrupted continuation of benefits, depending on the successful candidate’s employment status.
SKILLS
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to deliver educational and outreach materials to a variety of audiences.
Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
Knowledge of fire and public safety education, fire service operation, and emergency management.
