We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Staff Accountant to join our Finance team. This position plays a critical role in supporting the daily operations of the accounting department, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and maintaining strong internal controls. Under the general supervision of the Assistant Controller, the Staff Accountant will be responsible for general ledger management, account reconciliations, journal entries, and a variety of tasks related to compliance and audit preparation. What You’ll Do
In this role, your primary responsibilities will include:
Preparing month-end journal entries (e.g., utilities, accounts payable accruals, depreciation, reclasses, etc.)
Processing borrower escrow deposits, maintaining accurate records, and preparing weekly bank transfers as needed
Initiating and monitoring bank wires or transfers (e.g., loan disbursements, grants, monthly transfers)
Performing account reconciliations and analyzing general ledger balances to identify and resolve variances
Managing fixed assets and construction-in-progress (CIP) records and preparing related reconciliations
Preparing monthly bank account reconciliations across multiple accounts
Maintaining accounting records and providing financial support for the Hazardous Waste Collaborative, including journal entries and financial statement reviews
Serving as the finance liaison to various department managers across the agency
Reviewing contract budgets and approval within delegated authority
Compiling and processing Concur bi-weekly travel expense entries
Assisting with interim and year-end audit requests
Performing additional accounting-related tasks as assigned
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for a candidate who brings a combination of strong technical skills and a collaborative, proactive approach to their work. The ideal candidate will possess:
A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance (or equivalent experience and training)
2–3 years of accounting experience, preferably within a structured finance or nonprofit environment
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
Familiarity with automated accounting systems such as Great Plains and Sage Fixed Assets preferred
Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in all work
Excellent organizational and communication skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively
Experience working independently with minimal supervision
A sound understanding of accounting principles and practices
