Job description:

The Department of Health is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Staff Specialist (General Surgery) (Fellow) vacancy.

This is a 12-month role commencing in early February 2025. It is ideally suited to a surgeon that has recently been awarded a Fellowship in General Surgery (or will be prior to the commencement of employment) and is seeking clinical experience in emergency General Surgery as well as either Upper-Gastrointestinal and Hepato-Pancreatic-Biliary surgery (UGI/HPB), or Breast and Endocrine Surgery.

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania, and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania Medical School. The Hospital provides most specialist medical services for the region or state. This role has been established to improve the delivery of General Surgical services to patients and assist in the co-ordination and training of surgical Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) and Registrars.

Some of the clinical work in this role involves managing acute / emergency cases as part of the Department of General Surgery’s Emergency Surgical Unit (ESU). There is also involvement in outpatient and elective services.

There may also be the opportunity to be involved with other teaching and research activities.

The Role

Duties include the following:
Clinical activities:
Operating in the Main Theatre Suite.
Performing endoscopies in Day Procedure Unit.
Seeing patients in Outpatient Clinic.
Ward Rounds / Post-operative reviews.
Managing emergency cases (during and out of hours).
Provide consultative service for other specialty units.
Supervise the clinical work of the junior medical staff in Unit.
Non-clinical activities:
Participation in research
Teaching (including UTAS students, JMOs and surgical trainees)
Coordinating and contributing to Morbidity and Mortality meetings and/or clinical audits
Other administrative roles / committee membership opportunities

Salary

Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $210,000 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $288,000 with further salary increments available.

Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $291,472 - $301,349 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award.
In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

Allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $28,389 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,480 pro rata per annum.
Relocation allowance.
On call allowance % of Base Salary.
All other allowances as per current Award.
And subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on-call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.
Other Benefits:

You will have access to salary package a range of benefits including living expenses up to $9,010 + $2,650 in meal entertainment each FBT year + other benefits if eligible.
You will also have access to accommodation and relocation costs.


Details of Appointment

Fixed term full-time day work (with on-call), working up to 76 hours per fortnight commencing 3 February 2025 until 2 February 2026.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time and part time vacancies.

Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty
The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
