Within the Agriculture and Biosecurity division, Biosecurity and Food Safety branch is responsible for effective management and risk minimisation of biosecurity threats to NSW as well as the through-chain regulation of food safety. It delivers a risk-based approach to policy and compliance and provides regional engagement and coordination in response to emergency incidents and natural disasters impacting primary industries and the food sector.
About the role
The role is required to assist with the receipt and registration procedures for animal, plant and biological samples submitted for testing for diseases, assist with carrying out basic preparation of samples and materials for use in the laboratory and to liaise with other staff to ensure that turn-around times and quality standards are met.
This role requires someone who can adapt quickly, prioritise tasks efficiently, and maintain a strong focus on delivering high-quality results within a dynamic laboratory setting.
The key functions of the role include:
Confirm identity and assess the quality of samples and follow relevant processing protocols to fulfil data entry requirements into the Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS)
Assist professional staff with postmortem room procedures to label and collect appropriate samples
Follow waste management practices to comply with dedicated waste streams and appropriate disposal of waste
Promote and maintain a safe work culture in the laboratory
What you need to be successful
Qualifications in accordance with Part 2 (xv) of the Crown Employees (Department of Industry) Technical Staff Award
Current NSW Driver’s license and ability and willingness to travel

The salary offered to the successful candidate will be commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience, as outlined in the Crown Employees (Department of Industry) Technical Staff Award and the Technical Staff Merit Progression Guidelines.
A recruitment pool may be created for ongoing and temporary roles of the same role or role type that may become available for filling over the next eighteen months.
