At Nepean Hospital there is a dedicated team responsible for management of all patients with acute surgical conditions within the hospital itself as well as the neighbouring hospitals with the NBMLHD, known as the Acute Surgical Unit. ASU is an independent unit that manages all acute surgical admissions including trauma and is led by an on-site ASU Consultant during daylight hours and on-call overnight, responsible for management of all patients with acute surgical conditions.
Nepean Hospital is one of the two Alma Mater Hospitals of the RACS Western Sydney Network with SET Trainees rotations to other hospitals within NSW. As an Unaccredited Trainee within the Network the JMO may be required to work at the different facilities and locations with the NSW public health system as a reliever for RACS SET trainees within the RACS Western Sydney Surgical Training Network. These Hospitals include: Nepean, Blacktown, Mount Druitt, Westmead, Norwest, Orange, Dubbo, Bathurst, and Hawkesbury.
What you'll be doing
Taking a leadership role in coordinating the admission, management and discharge planning of patients seen in the Unit, and ensuring that the admission and plans are documented in the medical record.
Coordinating and documenting the admission, management and discharge planning of patients seen in or admitted to his/her Unit within the public health organisation.
Day-to-day assessment and management of the patients in the Unit under supervision of the consultant in charge/fellow.
Communicating and coordinating care with their team, arranging consultation with other staff when appropriate, arranging discharge and liaising with local medical officers and other community based care modalities.
Participating in the afterhours and relief roster.
Where you'll be working
Unaccredited Trainees in General Surgery will work in the Acute Surgical Unit, and/or attached to an elective General Surgery Unit at Nepean Hospital, Elective Surgical Unit at Blue Mountains Hospital or Elective or Emergency Surgical Care at Hawkesbury Hospital.
All terms will be three months and each trainee will rotate. A minimum of 26 weeks of general surgery will be allocated. There will be an opportunity to rotate to an ICU term. There will also be an opportunity to spend a term working with the Thoracic Surgery Unit at Nepean Hospital.
Nepean Hospital has its own night surgical trainees. These trainees are on-ground, working 1+00-0700 shifts 7 days on - 7 days off. Unaccredited Trainees working within the ASU will be rostered at some time for both in-hours shifts and after-hours shifts rotating as the night surgical trainee.
