Salary: The salary range for this position is CAD $45.46/Hr. - CAD $65.35/Hr.
Summary:

Providence Research, the research engine of Providence Health Care, is now hiring a permanent, full-time Accounting Manager to join their team to replace the retiring incumbent.

What you'll be doing:
Reporting to the Director of Administration, the Accounting Manager is responsible for the day-to-day financial activities of Providence Research (PR). The Accounting Manager is also responsible for providing timely and accurate financial information, overall management of financial transactions for all research trust accounts (500+), exceeding $48 million across 40 different research programs. This position provides strategic financial guidance, and support and has overall responsibility for the full accounting cycle of trust funding within Providence Research.
The Accounting Manager maintains firm internal controls to ensure that Providence Research achieves operational and strategic objectives in a manner that complies with legislative frameworks and generally accepted accounting principles. The Manager is responsible for leading a team of finance and accounting staff to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of general accounting services throughout PR. The Manager will be responsible for developing strategic plans and goals for the Providence Research accounting department in alignment with the Providence Research mission and strategic plan. The Accounting Manager develops and implements quality improvement initiatives and builds effective working relationships with internal and external partners including government and other health care organizations.
Please note that while this a hybrid position, initial training will be full-time on-site, after which Mondays and two other days will be in-office, with Mondays being the designated day the whole team comes in to connect and collaborate.
What You Bring:
Education, Training and Experience
A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline such as accounting and finance and a recognized professional accounting designation (CPA) plus a minimum of five (5) year’s recent and related experience including a minimum two (2) years’ experience in leadership within a large organization with an emphasis on accounting processing, financial systems and reporting or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
Proven ability to lead, mentor, and motivate teams, with experience managing both junior and senior staff.
Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work diplomatically and persuasively with diverse partners.
Extensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in a nonprofit setting, including revenue recognition, contributions, financial planning, and budgetary control.
Experience with computerized accounting systems, financial reporting tools, and advanced Excel; Workday; PeopleSoft experience is an asset.
Understanding of corporate transactions, taxation, reporting requirements, and charitable tax law (asset).
Ability to drive efficiency, implement best practices, and lead process improvements.
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail while keeping a strategic perspective.
Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
Adept at establishing and maintaining effective working relationships across various teams and organizations.
Demonstrates a proactive mindset, strong initiative, and the ability to work independently or in a team.
Commitment to maintaining confidentiality, ethical standards, and compliance with financial regulations.
Physically able to perform the duties of the position.

Your day to day:
Oversees the day-to-day operations and reporting for Accounting and Ancillary Accounting Services for Providence Research and other related reporting entities by methods such as monitoring, coordinating, controlling and performing these services.
Establishes and maintains an effective team structure by defining clear responsibilities for each team member, overseeing designated staff, reviewing workload assignments, and adjusting schedules to meet operational needs and deadlines. Conducts employee performance reviews, facilitation of employee(s) goal setting and provides necessary coaching as needed. Identifies educational needs of employee(s) and provide a learning environment for team growth. Develops, implements and evaluates on a regular and ongoing basis, orientation, training and education programs.
Collaborates with PR Human Resources (HR) on hiring staff by identifying vacancies, interviewing internal and external candidates, and making selection decisions.
Analyzes current situation and future requirements to develop and recommend short- and long-term goals and objectives for designated portfolio. Develops, coordinates, monitors, sets and implements long term financial practices and incorporates best practices into the designated portfolio to ensure that the financial goals are consistent with PHC’s long term objectives and comply with statutory and regulatory requirements.
Works in conjunction with various internal and external partners and departments within PHC, PHSA, other health authorities, auditors, funders and banks to support service providers, government and PHC reporting requirements and provincial working groups.
Manages the year-end audit process, including drafting financial statements, liaising with external auditors, responding to audit findings, and ensuring accurate financial reporting. Prepares audit working papers, supporting documents, and year-end financial analyses while providing guidance to departments on audit preparation.
Conducts variance and trend analyses, finalizes audit adjustments, and creates annual consolidated financial reports.
Maintains and updates the capital asset list, prepares annual amortization schedules, and ensures proper accounting for capital assets. Maintains and updates financial data within PeopleSoft, ensuring accurate reporting and analysis for decision-making.
Collaborates with auditors to assess financial risks, recommends improvements to financial controls, and implements changes to enhance accountability. Establishes internal controls to protect the organization’s resources and assets and to ensure the accuracy and reliability of information. Reviews external auditor’s internal control reports and recommends changes.
Oversees the preparation and filing of annual tax returns and ensures compliance with all tax regulations.
Oversees payroll functions, including bi-weekly payroll imports, reconciliations, WCB reporting, employer health tax remittances, and coordination with external payroll providers. Oversees financial transactions, including bank reconciliations, fund disbursements, wire transfers, and payment error resolutions.
Manages investment accounting, including journalizing transactions, reconciling accounts, valuing investments, analyzing performance, and processing purchase/redemption requests.
Establishes and refines accounting policies and procedures for research teams at affiliated institutions, ensuring alignment with best practices. Ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), institutional policies, and federal/provincial legislation.
Develops and manages the chart of accounts, ensuring financial structures support organizational needs and changes in finance functions.
Establishes and monitors internal controls to ensure proper fund management, compliance with accounting standards, and adherence to expenditure guidelines.
Manages general ledger (GL) activities, including complex adjustments, revenue reconciliations, interest allocations, inter-unit transfers, accruals, and year-end closings. Coordinates and executes financial reporting activities, including monthly fund statements, general ledger reporting, deferred revenue tracking, and over-expenditure alerts.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
