We are seeking a skilled Cost Controller to support cost management activities across D&T studies, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget, while maintaining strong financial discipline and visibility.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop and maintain project cost forecasts, including Final Forecast Cost (FFC), incorporating actuals, commitments, trends, and approved changes.
Monitor and control project budgets, ensuring alignment with approved funding and Rio Tinto governance (e.g., PM+).
Prepare and issue cost control reports, dashboards, variance analyses, and cost curves to support project reviews.
Collaborate with Study Leads, Planners, Estimators, Contract Admins, and Procurement to ensure alignment and data consistency.
Track monthly accruals, support cash flow projections, and assist with funding reviews.
Assist in developing control budgets, Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), and coding structures.
Support change management, contingency tracking, and trend analysis processes.
Contribute to quarterly and annual project reviews, including preparation of cost data and variance explanations.
Maintain cost systems (e.g., SAP, Excel), ensuring accuracy, auditability, and timely updates.
Support project meetings by providing cost updates and proactive insights on risks or deviations.
Identify opportunities to improve cost efficiency and reporting practices.

What You’ll Bring:

5–7 years of experience in cost control or project controls, ideally within capital projects or industrial environments
Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, conditional formulas, and data validation; familiarity with ERP systems such as SAP
Strong knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, cost tracking, variance analysis, and financial reporting
High attention to detail, analytical mindset, and proactive problem-solving approach
Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines
Strong communication skills — able to clearly explain financial matters to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
A collaborative and team-oriented mindset, with a sense of ownership and accountability
Comfortable working in cross-functional teams and adapting to evolving project needs
Fluency in French and English spoken and written is required. Rio Tinto is a global company, and the duties of this position require daily collaboration with colleagues, teams, or partners based outside Quebec.
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
Experience with PM+ or similar project governance frameworks is an asset
