Under supervision, works independently handling a more complex and diverse workload performing senior level professional auditing duties and performing related duties as required. These positions typically audit businesses or delegate agencies that operate at multiple sites and have a full range of tax or service obligations.
Essential Duties:
Stays in contact and in communication with businesses selected for primarily field audits and works on some more advanced discovery investigations and refund claims.
Designs audit programs and figures out a process of detailed testing to measure a taxpayer’s level of compliance with all applicable tax codes and properly compute tax liability amounts based on audit testing.
Meets with taxpayer or company representatives to discuss the audit process, present an audit schedule, and request financial documents.
Independently discusses complex tax compliance issues with taxpayers.
Examines accounting records, invoices, bank statements and computerized ledgers to determine compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, the municipal tax ordinance and contract provisions.
Uses software applications to extract accounting data from client databases and analyze computerized journal entries and trial balances for appropriateness of financial transactions.
Organizes and compiles audit findings into a file write-up that is concise and comprehensive and communicates the results of testing and level of compliance or non-compliance and liability owed by the business under review to the supervisor.
Recommends corrective action for delegate agencies in contract violation.
Interprets the tax ordinance and contract specifications and explains reporting requirements to the agency’s financial officer or representative.
Attends tax hearings and provides details related to assessed tax liability.
Makes recommendations for improving accounting and record keeping procedures.
Participates in special audit investigations and the preparation of related reports.
May supervise lower-level auditors on audit assignments and explains internal accounting processes and researches financial records to respond to inquiries from private auditors.
