About The Role
As the Database Engineering Manager, you will provide both technical leadership and strategic direction to our Database Engineering teams, who are responsible for building, operating, and contributing to the design of enterprise-wide database and data platforms, pipelines, and services.
Reporting into the Head of Infrastructure, this role is accountable for establishing and continuously improving robust processes that support the performance, reliability, and ongoing optimisation of our data services. You will play a key role in shaping our data capability, ensuring scalable, secure, and high-performing solutions that enable the wider organisation to make data-driven decisions.
Role Responsibilities
Technical Responsibilities
Lead the design, implementation, and operation of enterprise database and data platforms across cloud and on-premises environments
Ensure high availability, performance, security, and reliability of production database services
Define and maintain technical standards, best practices, and operational processes
Drive automation, DevOps, and modern engineering practices to improve efficiency and service delivery
Plan workloads, projects, and resources to meet operational and strategic objectives
Contribute to technology roadmaps and align database initiatives with organisational strategy
People & Leadership Responsibilities
Lead and develop the Database Engineering team to meet business needs
Set clear goals, KPIs, and development plans, and manage performance effectively
Recruit and retain talent in partnership with HR
Foster a collaborative, safe, and high-performing team culture
Manage departmental budget where applicable
About You
Tertiary qualification in Computer Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
8+ years’ experience in data or database engineering, with 5+ years in a leadership or mentoring capacity
Proven experience leading, coaching, and developing high-performing database or data engineering teams
Strong capability in setting direction, defining priorities, and aligning team outcomes to business objectives
Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders and collaborate effectively across technology and business teams
Deep expertise in data engineering principles, ETL/ELT processes, and enterprise data solution design
Extensive experience with enterprise data platforms, including on-premises databases and cloud data warehouses
Highly organised with strong planning, prioritisation, and time management skills in fast-paced environments
Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and clear written and verbal communication
