Description

Join an award-winning journalism team making a difference in Canada’s North. Nunatsiaq News is the newspaper of record for the Eastern Arctic. Serving 3+ communities and 70,000 readers a week with its website and print edition, Nunatsiaq News continues to grow its readership, web visits and advertising. We provide credible, in-depth and award-winning journalism, which together with lively website comments, draw readers from the North, southern Canada and around the world.

We have an immediate opening for a determined journalist who is hungry to break the news. The job needs someone capable of cutting through the official silence to get the news that affects our readers.

You are a skilled interviewer with strong writing and reporting skills, who pays close attention to detail and deadlines. The job requires a combination of hard-news writing (city hall, crime, and court) as well as feature writing and profile writing.

You are self-reliant, adaptable and used to working in a fast-paced multimedia environment of print, web and social media. Strong photography skills and social-media savvy are assets.

We are currently looking for a candidate who will be based in Kuujjuaq, Quebec, the biggest village in the Nunavik region. This position will also include travel to other northern communities in Nunavik.

We cover ground-breaking developments in government, culture, language and society.

The ideal candidate would understand the North — particularly the Nunavik region of Quebec — the northern way of life, traditions and institutions. Because our coverage area is multilingual, fluency in Inuttitut or French would be also be considered an asset. Experience covering courts, police and breaking news is also an asset.

This position should appeal to either a newsroom veteran looking for a new challenge by putting her or his skills to work in a demanding environment, or to a young reporter eager to gain experience quickly.

We have some flexibility for the right candidate in terms of start date, working remotely and working from home.

Salary commensurate with experience.
Qualifications

A journalism degree/diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Equivalent storytelling or writing experience gained in other work or life experience would be considered.
Strong interviewing, writing, reporting, photography and social media skills.
Organizational skills and a proven track record of meeting deadlines and breaking your own stories.
Ability to work independently, but also work well with others as part of a team.
A driver's licence.
Experience in the following areas would definitely be assets:
Photography
Knowledge of Canadian Press style
Use of social media
Web-based content management systems
Living or working in Canada’s North
An understanding of northern life, culture, history, traditions and institutions
Fluency in Inuttitut and/or French
Preference will be given to candidates with at least two years of professional experience or with demonstrated knowledge of the issues affecting residents of the Canadian Arctic.

Nunatsiaq News offers competitive compensation, including relocation assistance if required, subsidized housing, a car, health and medical benefits, profit sharing and an opportunity for career growth.
