Job description
About Us

The Church of England is a cornerstone of national life, with a presence in every community through its network of parishes. Organised into 41 dioceses, each led by a Bishop, it plays a vital role in enriching lives across the country.

The Diocese of York covers North and East Yorkshire, including the cities of York, Hull, and Middlesbrough, as well as two National Parks and the beautiful Yorkshire coast. With nearly 600 churches, 125 schools, and 442 parishes, we are a vibrant and diverse Christian community led by Archbishop Stephen Cottrell, with York Minster as our spiritual heart.

We are currently renewing our vision through Living Christ’s Story, a strategic initiative focused on deepening discipleship, growing missionary communities, extending our reach, and reshaping our structures and finances.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Reception and Database Assistant to join our friendly and committed team. This is a key role at the heart of our diocesan office, combining front-of-house reception duties with the management of our online contact database.

You will be the first point of contact for visitors and callers, providing a warm and professional welcome, while also ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of our contact management systems.

• Manage bookings and set-up for meeting and training rooms
• Coordinate catering and hospitality for meetings
• Process incoming and outgoing mail
• Liaise with service providers (IT, cleaning, postal, etc.)
• Maintain office supplies and manage stock levels
• Support colleagues with basic IT issues and equipment tracking

Database Administration

• Ensure data accuracy and integrity, working closely with HR and other departments
• Process updates following parish meetings and diocesan elections
• Support parishes with annual returns and statistics
• Provide training and support to database users across the diocese
• Participate in national database forums and reporting initiatives

General Administration
• Assist with mailings and administrative projects
• Provide cover for colleagues during absences
• Participate in annual reviews and professional development
• Contribute to the wider mission and work of the Diocese

About You

To succeed in this role, you will bring:
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• A friendly, approachable, and professional manner
• Strong IT skills and attention to detail
• Good organisational and time management abilities
• A flexible and proactive approach to work
• Empathy with the values and mission of the Church of England
• Familiarity with Church of England structures (desirable but not essential)

Why Join Us?
• Be part of a purpose-driven organisation making a real difference in communities
• Work in a supportive and inclusive team environment
• Enjoy a central location with on-site parking and good public transport links
• Opportunities for training and development

We are committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion and welcome applications from disabled candidates and those from UKME heritage as these groups are under-represented in our staff.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults. All employees are expected to share this commitment. You will be required to undertake safeguarding training, and this role may be subject to a DBS check.
