Job Description
Esperanza is seeking a detail-oriented Part-Time Staff Accountant to support our mission-driven organization by ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial operations. About the Role
The Staff Accountant plays a vital role in managing general ledger activity, grant tracking and reporting, payroll processing, and preparing financial reports. Reporting to our Finance Director, you’ll help maintain accurate financial systems and ensure compliance with accounting standards, grant requirements, and internal policies.
Key Responsibilities
General Accounting
Prepare and record journal entries accurately and on time
Reconcile bank, credit card, and balance sheet accounts monthly
Assist with month-end and year-end closing
Maintain organized financial records
Grant Tracking & Reporting
Monitor grant revenue and expenses for compliance
Track budgets, allowable costs, and reporting deadlines
Prepare accurate financial reports for funders and internal teams
Support grant audits and documentation requests
Payroll Processing
Process biweekly payroll, including timesheets, deductions, and benefits
Maintain payroll records in compliance with regulations
Reconcile payroll accounts and respond to staff inquiries
Accounts Payable & Receivable Support
Review and process vendor payments
Assist with invoicing and receivables
Ensure timely and accurate transaction recording
Compliance & Internal Controls
Support internal controls and finance policies
Assist in audit preparation and compliance documentation
Additional Duties
Contribute to process improvement initiatives
Support special projects as assigned
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
3–5 years of relevant accounting experience
Strong knowledge of accounting principles, internal controls, and payroll systems
Experience with grant tracking and reporting preferred
Experience in a nonprofit, school setting, or organization that manages government-funded programs preferred
Familiarity with public sector grant compliance and reporting (e.g., local, state, or federal grants)
Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks or similar) and Microsoft Excel
Excellent attention to detail, organization, and communication skills
Ability to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities with accuracy and timeliness
