Job Summary:

Reporting to Interim Co-Directors, the Associate Director, Office of First Nations & Inuit Education (OFNIE) will provide strategic leadership and management within the Office of First Nations and Inuit Education (OFNIE). This role involves leading administrative, financial, and human resources activities, developing and implementing policies, and fostering relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support the success and retention of in-community First Nations and Inuit students and success of the OFNIE programs.
Key Responsibilities:
In collaboration with the Interim Co-Directors, establishes the strategic direction of OFNIE, lead the implementation of initiatives and policies supporting First Nations and Inuit in-community student success.
Engage with internal stakeholders to advance strategic goals related to in-community First Nations and Inuit teacher education training.
Leads the administrative and financial activities of OFNIE, develop and implement operating and other budgets, and review expenditures.
Ensure compliance with university and departmental budget policies.
Represent OFNIE interests at senior-level meetings and advisory councils as required.
Advocate for the needs and career objectives of Indigenous students within the university and among external organizations.
Lead a team of professional and administrative staff, participate in hiring, set performance objectives, manage workflow, and oversee staff development and performance management.
Develop and implement in-community First Nations student-related policies and new initiatives.
Lead the implementation of McGill’s 52 Calls to Action related to in-community OFNIE programming.
Develop and strengthen working relationships with OFNIE partner communities, peer institutions, governments, and school boards as necessary.
Foster relationships with other university units and external organizations to support in-community First Nations and Inuit student success.
Analyze the effectiveness of programs and services and provide recommendations for improvement.
Develop and lead recruitment and retention strategies for in-community First Nations and Inuit students.
Develop external communication strategies and ensure all published materials meet university standards.
Write and review reports, proposals, and other publications related to OFNIE student success.
Prepare grant applications and secure financial resources for new OFNIE First Nations and Inuit student-focused services.
Work with University Advancement to identify and enhance bursaries and funding opportunities for Indigenous students.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
Undergraduate degree in a relevant field.
Minimum of five (5) years of related experience in administration, management, or a similar role.
Prior experience leading a team is required, including managing performance, mentoring staff, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
Strong understanding of First Nations and Inuit cultures, histories, and educational needs.
Demonstrate cultural awareness of and sensitivity to Indigenous issues in First Nations and Inuit contexts
Proven experience in strategic planning, policy development, and program management.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with diverse stakeholders.
Experience working in an educational institution and with First Nations and Inuit communities.
Knowledge of university administrative processes and policies.
Experience in grant writing and fundraising.
McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level # (4) qualifier on a scale of 0-4.
Additional Information
Full-time position with occasional evening and weekend work required.
Office environment with some travel to First Nations and Inuit communities and partner institutions.
