The QwelmĂnte SecwĂ©pemc (“QS”) is a collective of eight (8) SecwĂ©pemc communities who are united through QS-BC Government-to-Government (“G2G”) SkĂş7pecen’s Journey Letter of Commitment (“SJ LoC”). As a collective, we stand poised at a moment of transformation, a time to transcend the failed systems of consultation and engagement past and move into a new era. As a collective from four (4) historic Campfire / Divisions of the SecwĂ©pemc Nation, working collaboratively and committed to engaging across a spectrum of our rights and responsibilities relating to our lands and resources (Tmicw), our collective area of caretakership includes the Fraser River (including the Thompson/Shuswap and Fraser Headwaters) and Columbia River basins.
Position Profile:
The QS Communications Coordinator (the “Coordinator”) will be an integral member of the QS Office’s (“QSO”) team and will be foundational in supporting internal and external communications as it relates to the QSO’s implementation of the SJ LoC. The Coordinator role will also be beneficial in supporting the QSO’s team initiatives, and the G2G programs as it relates to community engagement and outreach.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Building and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external key G2G partners and/or interested parties to ensure any content writing requests are fulfilled without errors or misinformation;
Develop, maintain and optimize
G2G specific communication strategies, including those related to capacity building (i.e. the Knowledge Builders Program), stewardship initiatives and other projects as they arise;
Monitor and build the brand reputation and discussions relating to the organization in media spaces while being able to respond to audiences on time;
Review and editing applicable QSO reports, presentations, and other documents to support visual presentation and ensure consistency of QSO branding;
Monitoring and analyzing any benchmarks or metrics regarding the brand’s reputation and provide recommendations for improvement;
Develops an understanding of short and long-term department goals and planned initiatives;
Developing, maintaining and optimizing
an overall communications strategy which may include events, social media, website content, press conferences, emails, etc.;
Creating timely and engaging content that is optimized for all the social media outlets it will be published on;
Managing, planning, and coordinating QSO
related media events and posts;
Writing and developing media materials which may include press releases, media advisories, public service announcements, blog posts, etc.; and
Perform other duties and responsibilities, as applicable, in the performance for the position as assigned by the Administrative Manager or the SJ Director or its equivalent.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of an undergraduate degree or diploma in journalism, strategic communications, public relations or equivalent or equivalent experience;
Must hold a valid Class 5 Driver’s License;
Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in a communications or marketing role;
Minimum 3-5 years working in a First Nations setting or organization;
Microsoft & Windows computer training;
Proficiency in oral and written communication skills which, includes confidence to present material to a large audience;
Highly organized and can manage time well;
Excellent problem-solving skills and data analysis skills;
Experience in managing social media platforms, website platforms, which includes content creation and ROI generation;
Proven experience in SEO an asset;
Project management training an asset;
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build, maintain and strengthen relationships within and outside the QSO.
Other Qualifications, Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Preference will be given to members of the Secwépemc Nation or individuals of Indigenous ancestry. Indigenous applicants for the position will be required to provide proof of Indigenous ancestry.1 Applicants should have a strong understanding of Secwépemc culture, tradition and history. Preference will also be given to individuals who display a cohesive, progressive vision for reconciliation and co-governance of tmicw.

that has control of its membership list; An Indigenous group under a modern land claims agreement; An Inuit organization that is recognized by the Government of Canada; An Inuit organization that is recognized by the Government of Nunavut; One of the Métis Settlements in Alberta; A provincial organization that is a member of the Métis National Council, which includes the Métis Nation of British Columbia, the Métis Nation of Alberta, the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan, the Manitoba Métis Federation, and the Métis Nation of Ontario; or A Métis organization that is recognized by the Government of Canada.
In the event that
the person does not have the above documentation, ancestry may be proven by
submitting
a front and back copy of their parent’s status, citizenship, membership, registration, or enrolment card and the candidate’s long form birth certificate or baptismal certificate. Both documents must list the person’s name and the parent’s name showing the link between themself and their parent.
