Consultant Psychiatrist – Adult Community Health

Ko wai mātou | Our Organisation

At Te Whatu Ora I Te Toka Tumai we are committed to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and providing culturally safe care. We value role modelling manaakitanga as demonstrated by Ngāti Whātua in the gifting of their whenua on which our hospitals stand. We aspire to having a workforce reflective of the communities we serve and achieving equitable outcomes for all.

Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity

Te Te Whatu Ora I Te Toka Tumai has four adult community mental health centres (CMHCs): Manaaki House (Panmure), Cornwall House (Greenlane), Taylor Centre (Ponsonby) and Kainga Tiaki (Mt Eden).

We provide a range of high quality therapeutic programmes with a strong multi-disciplinary focus. As a consultant psychiatrist at Te Toka Tumai, you will thrive in a vibrant, innovative and diverse multidisciplinary environment. Professionally, you will have many opportunities to develop and specialise as well as receiving on-going support/ mentoring from highly experienced clinicians.

The community mental health teams provide a comprehensive range of therapeutic treatment options in collaboration with service users, their families/whānau, and local communities. This is achieved through the assessment and management of the complex health needs of service users, with the provision of effectively planned, episodic care that supports them to manage their overall healthcare needs along with home based treatment options available.

We are located close to the University of Auckland Medical School and there is the chance to become involved in the formal teaching programme and also supervise medical students on placement in our services. It is also possible to supervise and teach Psychiatric Trainees on the Auckland Registrar Training Scheme. Proximity to the University of Auckland can bring the opportunity for research collaboration.

We encourage and support the development of leadership skills in our Consultants Psychiatrists and there will be opportunities to apply for formal leadership positions.

Nga Pūkenga Motuhake | Important Skills

To be successful in this role you will be vocationally registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand with a current Practising Certificate or be eligible for registration (Please note, if you are an overseas specialist, you will be required to provide source verification of your qualifications for your registration application. )

You will also have experience and interest in providing a high-quality service to service users experiencing moderate to severe mental ill-health in a community setting and a commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for Māori is essential in this role.

You will also hold a full and clean driver’s license as this role involves some community work.

He aha ngā painga o tēnei mahi mōu | Why you will enjoy working here

We recognise there is more to life than mahi | work, and we encourage and provide access to all our staff several services and benefits to support themselves whilst they are employed within Te Whatu Ora I Te Toka Tumai. And Auckland is a vibrant, growing city with a rich cultural life.
