Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides support to the Transportation & Applied Technology Education Division, which includes Diesel Mechanics, Machine, Welding & Industrial Mechanics, Automotive Mechanics Technology Mechanics, and Auto Body Repair & Painting.
Serves as safety liaison; maintains a clean and safe environment in the toolrooms and student labs.
Conducts and documents required Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO) inspections and audits.
Maintains currency with required EHSO and other applicable training.
Implements safety rules and audits, identifies and mitigates hazards, and ensures chemicals are correctly stored and disposed of in accordance with university, state, and federal rules and regulations.
Maintains safety material data sheets for all chemicals, and stock control.
Prepares equipment for student labs and demonstrations either for live projects, credit, or non-credit courses.
Assists instructors in coordinating non-credit in-service and manufacturer training programs (e.g., plan and implement class set-up, arrange equipment/books, registration, maintain/repair mock ups, schedule facilities, etc). For live jobs, assist with completion of work orders.
Maintains all equipment, donated vehicles and mock ups, including development of and maintenance of a systematic inventory.
Maintains a systematic method of processing live work repairs, customer-owned vehicles/equipment, and live work.
Manages and maintains the inventory of tools and equipment, including but not limited to securing, receiving, storing, and issuing them to students, faculty, or staff.
Coordinates with division administrative support to order tools, equipment, and supplies and assists in budget preparation.
Assists in the preparation and management of the program budgets in collaboration with instructional personnel.
Operates hand and power tools and equipment according to manufacturer directions and OSHA safety regulations.
Collects and compiles data that is required for annual and comprehensive program assessment.
Maintains a clean driving record to operate a college vehicle to pick up local supplies and deliver them to the appropriate teaching lab or site.
Prepares reports on operations, inventories, and progress as directed.
Assists instructors in shop organization including equipment preparation and placement to ensure an effective learning environment.
Schedules maintenance and repair to the program facility as necessary. Conducts cleanliness and security of facilities.
Performs minor repairs and maintenance, adjusts/calibrates tools and equipment to ensure proper operation, and refer all significant repairs to the supervisor.
Supervises and train student workers.
Duties may include working outside regular scheduled hours, including nights and weekends.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Auto Mechanics, Auto Body, Diesel Mechanics or Machine Welding or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for repairs, service, training, and/or management of vehicles, machinery and/or heavy equipment; OR vocational degree in Auto Mechanics, Auto Body, Diesel Mechanics or Machine Welding or related field and 5 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for repairs, service, training, and/or management of vehicles, machinery and/or heavy equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of automotive mechanics, auto body repair and painting, heavy diesel equipment, and/or performing welding and machining, as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with OSHA, HIOSH or EPA.
Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software.
If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
Possess current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification; a) a minimum of three in the Collision area or five in the Mechanic area; OR b) Diesel Engine Repair and Medium Heavy Duty Air Brake Systems or any welding certification.
Possess a valid Hawaii driver’s license (type 3 or 4) and clean abstract
Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Ability to present a current OSHA 30-hour Industry Training Card within the first 60 days of employment

Demonstrated commitment and/or experience supporting the success of students.
