Mishka Social Services is a Hamilton-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting newcomers, immigrants, refugees, and racialized communities. Through culturally responsive programs, settlement support, and community resources, we help individuals navigate the challenges of settling in Canada with confidence and dignity.

Position Overview

We are seeking compassionate and motivated volunteers to support our Hamilton Newcomer Helpline. Volunteers will assist newcomers to Canada with a range of settlement needs, including housing, employment, language support, access to benefits, and community programs.

This is a flexible, phone-based volunteer role, ideal for individuals who want to make a meaningful impact in the newcomer community.

Key Responsibilities

Respond to newcomer inquiries via the helpline Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (shifts flexible).
Provide culturally informed guidance and support during the settlement journey.
Help newcomers understand their housing options and connect them with local resources.
Assist with job search tools, employment services, and applications.
Provide information on health, mental health, and social services.
Connect callers with language support, community programs, and legal referrals.
Promote social inclusion and reduce isolation among newcomers.
Qualifications

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Empathy and patience in working with diverse communities.
Fluency in English; additional languages (e.g., Arabic, Spanish, French) are an asset.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
Interest in supporting newcomers and learning about settlement services.

Shifts

Volunteers can choose one or more shifts per week (Monday to Friday)

8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
4:00 PM – 8:00 PM
