JOB SUMMARY
The Mount Waddington Food Hub network has been active for over a decade in the region, first receiving funds from Island Health and in the last few years from United Way. The food hub supports communities and local programs in the Mount Waddington region as they look to grow their food security. It has been a vital resource for community-based organizations through partnerships with Port Hardy Seniors Centre, North Island Building Blocks, Kwakiutl First Nation, Sointula Resource Centre, and other food security champions in the region. The Hub’s partnerships have fostered stronger community ties and improved food security across the region. In December of 2024, Kwakiutl Health became the new steward for the programming.
The Mount Waddington Food Hub Coordinator position is the main point of contact for the regional Food Hub. The Food Hub Coordinator will work with North Island communities and Food Hub Partners within the Region of Mount Waddington to initiate and coordinate the food hub programs and support communities and food programs that are part of the Hub. The Coordinator is the main point of contact for the Food Hub.
A portion of the work may be done from home; some will need to be completed in office in Tsaxis at the Kwakiutl Health Centre. It is essential that the candidate reside in the Mount Waddington Region. Travel to various communities to deliver workshops and attend meetings is required. You will organize your own time schedule and must be an excellent multi-tasker. The Food Hub Coordinator reports regularly to the Kwakiutl Health Director.
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee the implementation and annual renewal of the Community Food Hub Business Plan
Support and collaborate with local partners and spokes
Identify and facilitate learning opportunities for the hub and larger community.
Actively attend and engage with the United Way Community of Practice
Meet Regularly with United Way Food Hub leadership team
Participate in Community Roundtables; Connect with Organizations engaged in food programming
Reporting:
– Gather quarterly and annual reports from each partner in the Food Hub -Prepare a quarterly report of current activities and future plans – Provide Annual Report to the funder – Prepare regular and accurate financial reports
The following activities as identified by the plan:
Identify which partners, communities, organizations require assistance with funding and recommend funders/grants
Organize and hold Food Hub meetings and consultations with all food hub partners 1-2 times a year
Ensure that data collection is occurring with each Food Hub partner
Provide community outreach in each community regarding food security
Celebrate success in the communities of Mount Waddington with articles in the local paper, events, web site and social media promotion
Support work to make Food Hub building a reality for region
REQUIREMENTS:
Relevant post-secondary degree, diploma, or experience
Strong relational and collaborative skills; comfortable working with diverse populations and partners
Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of local Indigenous food culture
Understanding of Food Security and Food Sovereignty in the local context
Proven research, group facilitation, report writing and computer skills
Vehicle and valid BC driver’s license is required
Existing relationships with local organizations is an asset
Demonstrated Community Development skills
Experience managing a budget of up to $100,000
Knowledge of Kwakwaka’wakw Nations, culture and language
Demonstrated practice of cultural safety and humility
Proven research, group facilitation, report writing and computer skills
Vehicle and valid BC driver’s license is required
Existing relationships with local schools and organizations is an asset
Must have strong computer skills (knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Office, Excel, Internet research, and Email)
Must have demonstrated ability to work well with others
Must had demonstrated ability to work independently and be accountable to deadlines
Must have a demonstrated ability to maintain confidential information
Willingness to successfully undergo vulnerable criminal records check (see below)
Must agree to abide by Kwakiutl Band Council’s organizational policies (i.e. personnel, confidentiality, conflict of interest, and code of conduct)
SALARY
$30-38, based on experience and education
