Job Description: Research Assistant
Position Purpose: The purpose of this position is to support staff in the research project for

He Kākākura Whakamātau, and to contribute to a culture of research
success and excellence within Whariki. The position will be under the

supervision of the designated academic lead.

Whāriki aims to tautoko (support) Māori communities and contribute to
Māori advancement by uplifting the health of Māori people and whenua

(land).

SHORE & Whāriki, comprised of two multidisciplinary research groups, is
a University Research Centre, based in the College of Health at Massey
University. The research centre works in a Te Tiriti o Waitangi

partnership process to produce excellent research with the aim of
improving health and wellbeing in Aotearoa, New Zealand and globally.


He Kākākura Whakamātau is a Whāriki research project that examines
intergenerational effects of Māori experiences of welfare in Aotearoa.

We are specifically interested in analyses of poverty and state care.

Accountabilities

Research Support • Undertake media searches and collect other documents relevant to the
research study using a range of library search engines, online
catalogues and databases.

Collect, code and analyse media items using Microsoft Access,
Microsoft Excel and other database programmes.
Work with team members to assist in the organisation, coding and
analysis of media items and other data using NVIVO and other
qualitative coding schemes.
Work with team members to examine, discuss and analyse quantitative
research findings relevant to the research study.
Undertake training to maintain strict ethical standards of collection,
analysis and usage of sensitive data
Assist in the development of literature reviews and annotated
bibliographies.
Work with colleagues on drafting, editing and producing research
findings for publication.
Develop and maintain effective liaison with colleagues and research
partners.
Other duties or responsibilities which may be assigned by the Principal
Investigator from time to time.

Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications: A degree in a relevant area (Social Sciences, Public Health, etc) is
preferred but NOT essential.

Experience: • An interest in Māori research and its connection to social justice, self-
determination and redress.

An understanding of basic te reo and tikanga Māori.
Some experience in working in areas of a complex, sensitive or
delicate nature.

An understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methods
and analysis or a willingness to learn.
Prior experience of working as a member of a team.
Good reading, writing and computer skills.
Experience using range of Microsoft programmes and willingness to
learn more.

Some experience and comfort using online catalogues and databases
(ie, Library catalogues)
