Additional Information:

In accordance with Governor Jay Inslee's announced Proclamation 21-14.1 on August 18th, 2021, all K-12 school district employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by October 18th, 2021. Candidates who are extended a conditional offer of employment with Tacoma Public Schools will be required to submit proof of vaccination status in compliance with Governor Inslee's mandate, prior to official hire with the district. Individuals qualifying for a medical and/or religious exemption outlined under the Governors directive will be required to provide proof of exemption prior to official hire with the district. Tacoma Public Schools Human Resources will work directly with candidates to finalize proof of compliance with the Governors mandate prior to official hire.

Examples Of Duties

This position ensures availability and performance of the databases (DBs) that support various business applications throughout the District; maintains project schedules and tasks related to DB maintenance functions; monitors structured query language (SQL) server jobs and their performance; conceptualizes, documents, and communicates solutions to meet department goals and District objectives.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Monitors and maintains DBs and middleware for efficiency, performance, backups, and standby data replication for applicable technologies; proactively watches the DB systems to ensure minimum downtime; performs DB performance evaluations; makes recommendations to improve performance.

2. Collaborates with other information technology (IT) staff related to application performance, tuning designs, metadata definitions, and infrastructure recommendations; works closely with key stakeholders supporting District initiatives and projects.

3. Manages, monitors, allocates physical DB storage for DB systems; watches DB redundancy modes, log file sizes, clustering, mirroring, and overall DB size to minimize disk space usage; performs capacity planning and monitoring of individual DB growth; assists users to determine database requirements.

4. Plans, coordinates, and performs environment cloning/copying of production environments to test and development environments for data migration between systems.

5. Performs DB queries and analysis; carries out report development utilizing SQL server; performs architecture, installation, upgrades, patching, and documentation of DBs and application technology stacks.

6. Recommends DB architectures for both transactional and analytical systems; implements technologies such as DB job automation and scheduling.

7. Maintains project schedules and tasks related to DB maintenance functions; coordinates scheduling and implementation with the corresponding stakeholders; provides event monitoring for up/down DBs status and other reported errors; reports any issues and outages to the applicable administrator or designee.

8. Administers change control process for production moves.

9. Evaluates and makes recommendation on new tools, products, and features related to the DB environment; develops plans for District DB capacity growth; works with data stewards to determine enterprise strategic DB needs.

10. Provides training and education to key stakeholders; provides technical support to developers on use of specific DB platforms and the design, programming, and development of applications that will interface with DB platforms; assists stakeholders with application compatibility and interoperability testing.

11. Performs patch testing and installation to SQL server DBs; coordinates all SQL server DB upgrades; reports functionality with deliverables; provides reports to District stakeholders on progress of tasks assigned; ensures critical items are escalated, as appropriate.

12. Provides estimates of required time and resources for completion of assigned projects or tasks to appropriate District staff and/or administrators, and stakeholders; provides project status reports; records actual time used.

13. Develop and maintain technical documentation including policies, procedures, and standards to support system operations; including, but not limited to, ensuring test procedures are defined, documented, and implemented for all DBs, backups, fail-over, and recovery.

OTHER JOB DUTIES

1. Maintains and updates knowledge and skills required for success in the position by participating in professional development activities as needed or assigned.

2. Assists appropriate department staff during peak workloads and absences; provides backup assistance for other technical support staff for special projects when assigned.

3. Performs related duties as assigned.

4. Regular, reliable, predictable attendance or physical presence is an essential job requirement and critical to the performance of the work.

CONDITIONS

Experiences frequent interruptions; exposed to video display; may work in confined areas; may be required to work extended and/or irregular hours; required to travel to District sites; exposed to confidential information; required to bend, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, twist, climb, and/or be mobile, and move/lift heavy objects up to 60 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Associate's degree in computer science, information systems, technology engineering, or related field or compatible vocational-technical training; Bachelor's degree, preferred; five years of experience with database administration, implementation, migration, and upgrades; experience with relational databases, working in Windows environments, and writing SQL queries; or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge skills and ability required to perform the work.

Licenses/Special Requirements

Valid Washington driver's license with access to personal transportation.

SQL Server Database certification, preferred.

Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA), preferred.

Proof of training and/or certification, required, if applicable.

Fingerprints and successful WSP and FBI background clearance/sexual misconduct clearance.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of and expertise with Structured Query Language (SQL) objects, stored procedures, views and functions.

Knowledge of SQL language, SQL server integration services (SSIS), SQL server reporting services (SSRS), transact SQL (T-SQL) queries.

Knowledge of SQL server locking, indexing, and error handling.

Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of system analysis, programming languages, and activities

Knowledge of business practices in multiple departments

Skill in oral and written communication.

Skill in presentation and interpersonal communication

Skill in Microsoft SQL server technologies.

Skill in solid SQL scripting.

Skill in Windows/SQL server DB upgrades

Skill in SQL server database performance tuning and security
