Are you a creative communicator with a passion for social media and a strategic mindset? The City of Edmonton is seeking a Social Media Coordinator to join the Chief Communications Office. In this role, you’ll support the development and execution of engaging, concise and trend-aware content, adapting tone across platforms while helping to advance municipal communications goals. You’ll help shape the City’s voice on social channels, support in guiding and executing social media plans and contribute fresh ideas, all while building your expertise within a supportive public-sector environment.
What You Will Do:
Support the implementations of City’s social media corporate strategy for the best use of public social media channels to achieve communications and other business goals
Help balance community engagement and civic responsibility, learning to identify when content should spark interaction versus when it should convey clear, public-serving information
Assist in ensuring social media messages and tactics align with brand standards, visual guidelines and evolving best practices
Contribute to the City’s social media presence through brainstorming, drafting content and monitoring audience engagement
Aid in crafting editorial approaches by developing compelling, human‑centric narratives that reflect brand voice and resonate with Edmontonians
Monitor emerging trends and recommend content opportunities that tie into ongoing initiatives or campaigns
Collaborate with brand, story and social teams to contribute to creative and impactful communications strategies
Help maintain and refine the City’s Social Media Standards, tools and resources to keep communications staff up to date with platform changes and best practices
Support senior staff by preparing draft guidance or advisory input for social media–heavy projects
Assist in triaging, flagging and proposing responses to social media comments, under the review of senior team members
Monitor social channels for emerging issues and recommend response strategies for senior review
Track the performance of social media campaigns through basic data collection and summarize insights to guide future efforts
Help compile monthly or annual social media statistics and analysis for reporting purposes
Support initiatives tied to the City Plan and municipal priorities through coordinated social media efforts
Stay informed about relevant political, economic, digital, and socio-cultural trends, including new technologies, tools, platform updates and regulatory changes.
Provide strategic insights to adapt to evolving digital landscapes, ensuring content remains relevant and aligned with best practices
Qualifications:
Graduation from a 2-year college, accredited post-secondary institute, or technical institute program with coursework related to marketing, journalism, communications, or public relations
Minimum of 2 years of experience in a public relations, public affairs, or public information position
Assets
Experience working in municipal government or the public sector
Expertise with social media in-app and third party content creation tools
Experience with Google Workspace, Asana and Hootsuite
Knowledge of brand strategy and visual identity, with the ability to to create on-brand, visually compelling content
Advanced creative skills in visual content creation, including photography, video production and graphic design
Skills required for success:
Proven experience in developing social media strategies, managing online communities and creating engaging content
Strong understanding of the latest social media tools, platforms, and trends, with the ability to teach and support colleagues in adopting these tools
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to establish effective working relationship.
Ability to manage competing priorities and projects with short timelines
A proven ability to deliver quality marketing and communications products and advice on time and on budget
Knowledge of technology, emerging trends and requirements of social media
Creative skills in lo-fi content creation, including copywriting, mobile photography and video production, as well as editing and curating visual assets
Understanding of targeted audiences and typical interactions for each social media channel
Experience with developing online communities, creative content development, social media writing and analyzing data
