Property and Evidence Room Technician
Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Police Chief, this position receives, catalogs, stores, and maintains all property seized and evidence. Assists with collecting evidence from crime scenes and prepares and submits items to labs for forensic testing.
Job Responsibilities
Essential Functions: - Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Receives, logs, stores, and maintains evidence and personal property until it is properly released or disposed of in accordance with Texas Code of Criminal Procedures; assigns unique tag numbers for each piece of evidence; participates in conducting audit and inventory of items.
Researches cases with the District Attorney’s Office on current status of cases involving evidence stored and submits reports and videos to District Attorney’s Office as needed.
Assists with processing crime scenes to include collecting DNA, swabbing for bodily fluids, dusting for latent prints, and packaging evidence to log chain of custody; submits evidence to the crime labs for forensic testing.
Assists with processing citizen requests for police reports, accident reports, and alarm permits; sorts, scans, and files reports; answers phones and transfers calls as needed.
Assists with audits and inventories on a quarterly basis.
Assists with instructing new patrol officers in evidence packaging, instructs at Citizens and Junior Police Academy, and presenting at elementary schools and public events.
Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Job Requirements
Knowledge of –
Property and evidence handling, tagging, and storage procedures.
Proper chain of custody for collecting and handling evidence.
Federal and State laws and rules for the storage, transfer, and disposal of evidence and property.
Regulations governing the release of information from law enforcement agency records.
Crime scene processing procedures.
Record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records.
Proper English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
General office policies and procedures; computers and general office equipment.
Skill in –
Interacting tactfully and professionally with City staff, outside agencies, and the public.
Maintaining accurate records, filing systems, and technical documents.
Organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
Collecting, processing, and preserving crime scene evidence and property in accordance with procedures.
Preparing accurate reports and statements.
Establishing and maintaining strong working relationships.
Maintaining confidentiality of investigations and information involving evidence.
Operating a computer and related software.
Education and Experience:
Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field and one (1) year of inventory management or property room experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Ability to flex work schedule as needed to meet operational needs of the department.
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver’s license is required.
Property and Evidence advanced certification.
Work is performed in the Property and Evidence Room and at various crime scene locations. Requires exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood and other bodily fluids, and outdoor weather conditions. Operates and standard office equipment such as personal computer and related software, fax machine, and copy machine.
Starting Salary:
$48,486 Annually. Step increase after successful six-month probation. Annual step increases.
