About the role
The Engineering Traffic Officer is responsible for conducting investigations and technical assessments, and make recommendations for improvements to resolve pedestrian, cycling, traffic and road-safety related issues through collaborative stakeholder engagement, ensuring access and traffic/parking related issues of future development and urban renewal projects meet the City’s strategies and objectives.


Key accountabilities

Investigate and resolve known traffic, parking and road safety issues in a timely and professional manner.
Provide timely and considered responses to customer issues to ensure that the unit has a customer focus.
Undertake appropriate technical assessments and record accurate site information to make recommendations or provide guidance to improve road safety and operation.
Work collaboratively with other stakeholders to build a consistent approach to safety management.
Develop, undertake and analyse traffic and parking studies and audits, review and assess proposed changes, and provide advice and recommendations to Management and relevant committees on traffic-related issues.
Assess, manage and mitigate the transport impact of future developments and urban renewal projects to improve residential amenities and ensure accessibility and safety.
Identify key infrastructure initiatives to support the promotion of active and sustainable forms of transport.
Effectively manage a broad range of tasks concurrently, in a professional manner and be accountable for the responsibilities and tasks assigned to the role.
Assist the delivery of transport-related infrastructure within time and budgetary constraints.
Assess, mitigate and manage the access of oversize and over-mass heavy vehicles on the City’s streets to preserve the local amenity and protect the City’s assets in accordance with Council process.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Tertiary qualifications in traffic engineering, transport planning and/or equivalent experience in a related field.
Demonstrated work experience in the fields of traffic engineering, transport planning, project management and/or road safety, preferably in local or state government environment.
Demonstrated ability to understand regulations, policies, guidelines, technical directions and procedures.
Able to resolve traffic and transport-related problems, negotiate viable options with key stakeholders and implement preferred solutions.

This role has the option of a rostered day off each month, known as a 1+-day month.
