Learn to Swim Instructor | West Wave Henderson

Here at Auckland Council, our leisure centres play a key role in achieving our goal of making Auckland the most active city in the world. And right now, we’re looking for Learn to Swim Instructors to join our West Wave Henderson Team to help achieve that goal!

This is a fantastic job where you don’t need any formal qualifications or experience to apply—just a passion to work with our diverse community while also making a difference! We'll provide the training you need to succeed in the role.

Day-to-day you could expect to work on:

Teaching babies and toddlers the basic principles of how to swim (we'll teach you how to do this!)
Maintaining a fun, caring and safe environment for customers and visitors
Being part of an amazing team serving your local community

We have two exciting opportunities available:

1 x Fixed Term Position (until June 2026) – 8 hours/week
1 x Permanent Part-Time Position – 8 hours/week

Schedules:

Fixed Term: Wednesdays 3:15–7:15pm & Sundays 12:30–4:30pm
Permanent: Tuesdays 3:15–7:15pm & Sundays 12:30–4:30pm

These roles focus on working with babies, toddlers, and preschool-aged children, so experience in infant care and early learning is beneficial.

He kōrero mōu: About you

You’ll be a confident swimmer and an enthusiastic instructor with a genuine love for water and working with young children. Exceptional customer service and clear communication skills are essential, as you'll be engaging with families and the wider community.

This role is all about nurturing confidence and joy in the water for our littlest swimmers. You'll be working closely with babies, toddlers, and preschool-aged children, helping them feel safe, supported, and excited to learn. If you have a gentle approach and a passion for early childhood development, this is a beautiful opportunity to make a splash in their learning journey.

If you do have a recognised swim teacher qualification or previous experience as a Swimming Instructor, that’d be fantastic. However, we will provide full, comprehensive training that you need to excel in the job.

If you do not have a recognised swim teacher qualification, e.g. AUSTSWIM, you will be required to attend the following two-week training between dates for training to be – 22 sept 25 – 3 October (training)

To be considered for this role, you must also be willing to complete First Aid training.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer.

As a Learn to Swim Instructor, you’ll have free access to our facilities, hours that provides work and life balance, and above all else a fun, supportive team. You will also have the satisfaction of knowing the work you do is important and impactful, especially the pride and joy you will get from watching someone gain the confidence that comes from learning how to swim.

We strongly encourage up-skilling and training and as such once you are hired you will have the opportunity to pick up extra hours in a variety of roles such as Lifeguard, Customer Service Rep, Recreation Assistant and more.

You’ll have access to a range of fantastic Auckland Council benefits, including the option of a Zoo pass and a range of partnership discounts. And as a Leisure Centre employee, you will enjoy free use of the facilities.

If you're nurturing, energetic, and love supporting little learners—we would love to hear from you!
