Full job description
Are you a detail-oriented Civil or Environmental Engineer or Technologist/Technician with a passion for sustainable solutions and a strong head for numbers? If you enjoy problem-solving, working with data, and want to make a lasting environmental impact—this role may be a great fit for you.

Burnside is currently seeking a motivated professional to join our Solid Waste Management team in Pickering. You’ll be part of a collaborative group working to deliver thoughtful, practical, and forward-thinking solutions to clients across Ontario.

What You’ll Be Doing

In this role, you’ll contribute to the planning, design, and monitoring of waste management systems, including support for long-term master plans, Environmental Assessments, and strategies for diversion and disposal. Much of the work involves data analysis, calculations, and detailed documentation—so strong math and analytical skills are a must. You’ll see projects through from the concept phase to implementation, knowing your contributions help communities operate more sustainably.

Key responsibilities include:

Preparing technical proposals, assessments, design plans, tender packages, and project reports
Supporting regulatory communications and applications
Conducting site monitoring and providing training on waste operations
Engaging in solid waste planning, permitting, and facility implementation
Collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to meet project goals
What You Bring to the Role

A degree or diploma in Civil or Environmental Engineering or Technology
Excellent math, analytical, and critical thinking skills—you’re comfortable working with data, spreadsheets, and detailed calculations
Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 (especially Excel)
Strong time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple tasks or projects
Clear and professional communication—both written and verbal
Ability to travel occasionally to client sites or other Burnside offices
It’s a bonus if you have:

Experience in solid waste management or with a consulting engineering firm
Knowledge of composting, recycling, or waste processing technologies
Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D
Understanding of environmental legislation and contaminant hydrogeology
