Responsibilities
The person in this position is part of the TEAM CONCEPT at SILVERBELL PEDIATRICS which is to devote the delivery of primary care in a pediatric clinic setting
JOB SUMMARY: Pediatric medical assistants work with pediatricians providing care to infants, children and teens under the age of 21
The front office assistant is responsible for the business/paperwork side of the practice
Checking in patients
Collecting and verifying insurance information
Collecting co-pays, co-insurances, deductibles, any patient balances owed or any other forms of payment
Must have an in-depth knowledge of the insurance verification process and how to calculate collection of copays, co-insurance and/or deductible amounts
Collecting new patient forms
Verifying eligibility for all visits
Updating patient files
Scheduling laboratory tests and appointments
Scheduling new patients and follow-up appointments
Answering office phone calls/taking after hours call
Setting up phone appointments
Verifying appointments with patients by phone
Collecting and processing laboratory reports
Processing referrals and obtaining authorizations
Patients often spend the most time with back office pediatric medical assistants
Back-office duties include but are not limited to:
Take patient vitals, including: O2 and temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, height, length and weight
In children under 3, include head circumference with no blood pressure
Assist in examinations and procedures
Completely fill out laboratory requisitions and collect samples (as needed) and fill out others forms when necessary
Always follow universal precautions to protect self and patients
Provide patient education as needed
Stock exam rooms with supplies, keep track of vaccinations, etc
Perform CLIA waivered tests
Obtain a brief medical history
Ask about the reason for the visit and collect symptom information for the patient chart
Give the patient vaccinations (as needed) and record the location of injection, lot number, vaccination name and method of injection
This information is then recorded on the patient vaccination record
Between patients, back office medical assistants clean, disinfect and prepare rooms for the next patient
From time to time, pediatric medical assistants perform special duties to assist the pediatrician
Special duties may include obtaining specimens for rapid strep tests, respiratory panel, blood draws and administer medications ordered by the provider
Both front office and back office staff are equally responsible for:
Daily housekeeping duties: sweeping/mopping floors, wiping down/sterilizing patient waiting rooms/emptying out the trash bins, etc
Answer office phone calls/taking after hours call
Cross cover/cross training between front/back-office duties as needed
Any other duties or responsibilities the provider and/or office manager may assign as needed
Ability to relate to the public regardless of racial, ethnic and economic status
